Kent County Council is working with Swarco eVolt to install 14 new rapid charge points across the county, for use by taxis and private hire vehicles.
Part of the costs for the new 50 kW units are backed by the government’s Ultra Low Emission Taxi Infrastructure Scheme. Work to install the 14 new charge points has begun, and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Covering six districts, the points are intended to boost access for taxis drivers to public EV charging infrastructure. Where possible, some districts are considering incentives suitable for sites to further encourage usage, and switching to EV models.
Susan Carey, Kent County Council Cabinet Member for Environment says: “Much thought has gone into the location of these extra charging points to make them as convenient as possible. We hope they encourage more people to make the switch to electric.”
Each of the Rapid charger sites being installed has two charge points, offering simultaneous charging of two vehicles. To begin with, one point will be for the exclusive use of taxis and the other will also be open for public use. However, the uptake of electric taxis and usage data will be constantly monitored and reviewed, and the second point can be restricted to taxis only.
